ABOUT

Welcome to our 46 acres of mountains, fields, stream, and woodlands, offering sanctuary to many since the 1980s.

Highland Meadows Farm includes a 37’ ceremonial tipi, a kitchen garden, blueberry, blackberry and raspberry bushes, and a hike to a prayer pole at the top of a small mountain.   In the beautiful surrounding farmlands one can find hikes, rail trail, walks, horseback riding, farmers markets, restaurants, cafes, antiquing, an August County Fair, and some wonderful art galleries and music festivals.

We  welcome individuals, couples and families.  The tranquility of the property is ideal for serious meditators and those working a new or long-term sobriety, as well as those seeking a purely recreational retreat.

Originally founded by students of Hilda Charlton, a meditation teacher through whom the wonders of the universe expressed themselves to people of all creeds and all walks of life, the Land remains a place of safety and inclusion for all living beings.  We aim for this by seeking to abide by the following covenants:

  • Doing no harm to any living creature (Ahimsa). This includes being vegetarian while on The Land.

  • Abstaining from alcohol and all other recreational substances while on The Land.

  • Following Right Speech: is it true, is it necessary, is it kind?

  • Practicing celibacy when on The Land.

Please see our Covenant Agreement.

A dedicated area exists for the practice of Vipassana Meditation in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin.

“I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds. I slept as never before, a stone on the riverbed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees. All night I heard the small kingdoms breathing around me, the insects, and the birds who do their work in the darkness. All night I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling with a luminous doom. By morning I had vanished at least a dozen times into something better.”
